About Savannah Country Club
History
The story of Savannah Country Club begins in the early 1920s when Henry C. Walthour, one of Savannah’s wealthiest cotton brokers, acquired several hundred acres on Wilmington Island. His vision was to create a high-end, prestigious community with the General Oglethorpe Hotel as its centerpiece.
From the outset, golf was integral to the General Oglethorpe. As the sport gained popularity across the nation, the hotel’s standout feature became its golf course, designed by Donald Ross, one of the most celebrated golf course architects in the country. Ross, renowned for his work at Pinehurst in North Carolina, referred to the General Oglethorpe Golf Course as one of his finest accomplishments. Though the hotel’s success was cut short by the stock market crash of 1929, the golf course continued to thrive, remaining a beloved destination for golfers. Despite several changes in ownership between 1935 and 1965, and periods when the hotel was closed, the course was a consistent draw.
In 1965, Savannah realtor and developer William Lattimore purchased the property and undertook a significant renovation of the golf course. Lattimore enlisted prominent architect William C. Byrd, who brought the course up to PGA standards, adding underground irrigation systems, canals, lakes, and ponds. In 1967, Lattimore renamed the property the Savannah Inn and Country Club, which later became the Sheraton Hotel until its closure in the 1980s. After several years of vacancy, the property was transformed into luxury condominiums and reopened as Wilmington Plantation. At this point, the golf course became a separate entity, known as the Wilmington Island Club, complete with a full-service clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts.
Throughout the years, the golf course has remained the heart of the property, its exceptional design and rich history continuing to foster a love for the game. In 2018, under new ownership by Brianna and O C Welch III, the course was renamed Savannah Country Club. This change not only honored its storied past but also introduced a modern, upscale approach to dining, events, and the overall experience. In addition, racquet sports, including tennis and pickleball, were incorporated into the club’s offerings, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere for all members. With a renowned golf course, world-class tennis and pickleball facilities, and exceptional amenities, Savannah Country Club has become a premier destination for golfers, racquet enthusiasts, and families alike, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
